Why we doing this
Pajé Agostinho Manduca
Pajé Agostinho Manduca was a native of the last village on the Jordão river, Novo Segredo, and founder of the São Joaquim community. He left a rich cultural legacy for the Huni Kuin people in the form of books, films and more. The festival is a time of great joy and celebration, with many chanting “Viva Viva Ikamuru Yuxibu!” We are deeply honored to take part in this commemoration of Pajé Agostinho Manduca’s life and preservation of Huni Kuin heritage.
Pajé Agostinho Manduca was an influential advocate for indigenous rights and land preservation in Acre, Brazil. He traveled extensively to share Huni Kuin teachings, campaign for demarcation of tribal territories, and forge alliances with other indigenous nations. Agostinho Manduca was also dedicated to passing on Huni Kuin knowledge and traditions to younger generations through oral instruction and published works like Una Isi Kayawa.
Deeply loved by his family and community, Pajé Agostinho Manduca passed away on December 27, 2015 at the age of 87. The annual Ikamuru Festival honors his tremendous legacy. We feel privileged to visit Aldeia São Joaquim during this ceremony commemorating such an impactful elder and leader.
